In an ever-changing world, learning new skills is key to a thriving career. It can also keep your brain healthy. Here are five reasons why you should start learning new skills today.
1. Education is changing
The way we think about education is changing. The idea that you train for a job during a few years in your twenties and then work with the same tasks until you retire is no longer a relevant model. In the coming years, most people will switch careers multiple times during their professional lives. And even if you stay in the same profession, the skills required will change so much that you need to train and retrain constantly to keep up.
That is why every professional need to adopt a strategic approach to lifelong learning. Instead of taking time off to study a whole semester, most people will have to learn new skills in smaller periods of time. For example by taking online courses or participating in professional learning communities.
2. Active learning will be a required skill in the job market
Active learning and learning strategies will be the second most important skill in the job market in 2022, according to ‘The Future of Jobs Report 2018’ from the World Economic Forum.
The skills to perform most jobs will have shifted significantly by 2022 and more than half of all employees will require significant re- and upskilling by 2022, the report says. So the best way to future proof your professional self is to train your ability to learn.
3. The world of marketing is changing
The world is changing at a faster pace than ever due to digitalization and connectivity. Marketing will be at the forefront of that change, adopting new trends early and moving with changing consumer behaviors.
When the ways people connect and communicate shift, so will marketing strategies. There are two primary forces that will affect the marketing landscape going forward: technology and creativity. On the one hand, marketing is getting more technical with the adoption of marketing automation, data analysis, and AI. But when everyone has access to the same technical tools, creativity will be what sets you apart.
So marketers today need to be fluent in both worlds. We need to understand the technical side to be able to utilize the right tools, but also have the creative skills to use them in innovative ways. Constant learning is the best way to keep your technical and creative skills sharp.
4. It´s what makes us human
Our ability to change and adapt is arguably one of our most defining traits as humans, and by many scientists believed to be the main skill that gave early homo sapiens an edge over other species. When our environment changed we learned how to adapt. Through language and storytelling, homo sapiens could gather and share knowledge fast and effectively. In the age of intelligent machines, we will most certainly need a combination of human and machine learning to achieve the best results.
5. It´s good for your brain
If you are a marketer working primarily with your mind you need to take care of your instrument. And one of the best ways to keep your brain healthy is to challenge it by learning new things. “Embracing a new activity that also forces you to think and learn and requires ongoing practice can be one of the best ways to keep the brain healthy,” says to Dr. John N. Morris, director of social and health policy research at the Harvard-affiliated Institute for Aging Research.
